Prior to the start of excavation work for the Museum Reinhard Ernst in August 2019, there was a large parking lot at the site. While excavating, the construction machinery uncovered the remains of a parking garage, believed to have been constructed in 1971.
However, just a few years later, the parking garage was demolished to make way for the construction of the Dresdner Bank building (now Commerzbank). A new parking garage was constructed a few meters away and, due to its distinctive façade featuring tall yellow piping, became popularly known as the “Giraffe Cage.”
