An Evening for and with Helen Frankenthaler

2025-03-13

Overview

It was wonderful to celebrate with over 1400 guests from home and abroad the opening of our exhibition Helen Frankenthaler. Move and Make during our preview on Thursday 13th March and the ensuing official opening on 16th March 2025.

Hailed by the press as ‘Helen Frankenthaler seen anew’ (FR) and by our visitors as ‘simply wonderful’, the exhibition features key works by the internationally acclaimed pioneer of Abstract Expressionism from the Reinhard Ernst Collection. Breakdancers greeted our guests and visitors on both days at the entrance, a hint to the title of the exhibition and the artist’s extremely agile artistic practice.

Helen Frankenthaler’s importance and her contributions to the development of art in the 20th Century were presented by the speakers during the preview evening, hosted by Press spokeswoman Kathrin Grün: Dr Oliver Kornhoff focussed on the title of the exhibition Helen Frankenthaler. Move and Make, while Elizabeth Smith, Executive Director of the Helen Frankenthaler Foundation, placed the artist’s work and the Reinhard Ernst Collection in an art historical context. Aspects such as the structure and key works of the exhibition were covered by curator Lea Schäfer, and last but not least, the Museum Donor Reinhard Ernst shared his fascination with the American painter.

Our sparkling wine partner, Sektmanufaktur Vaux, added to the bubbly atmosphere, and US-inspired canapés were served by rue 1 by Gollner’s.

We are very grateful for all the support and visits over the last days. If you could not make it, do come and visit soon, the exhibition will be on view until 28th September.
