Planned, Celebrated, and Opened – A Throwback to the Last Few Weeks

2024-06-28

Overview

The museum was a busy hive of activity right up to the opening: while the curator attached the last labels, our press spokeswoman guided camera crews through the building, and our restorer supervised the final installation of sculptures by artists such as Stella, Chamberlain, and Kricke. The team worked in an excited frenzy to finalise every detail for the grand opening, in order to offer our guests an unforgettable experience.

On June 15, the long-awaited museum gala took place: museum founder Sonja and Reinhard Ernst had personally invited artists, architects, and those involved in the realisation of this project. The previously closed museum was transformed into a vibrant place of encounters and joy. Around 260 guests filled the building with laughter and lively conversation. A highlight of the evening was the ceremonial presentation of the Cross of Merit 1st Class of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany to Sonja and Reinhard Ernst by the Hessian Minister President (read more here). A mesmerising light show drew all the guests from their tables to the atrium’s windows, capturing key moments of the museum’s construction as well as works of the Reinhard Ernst Collection. As the lights were directed towards the entrance of the exhibition galleries, guests could finally experience abstract art fully to the sound of jazz music rising up from the foyer. The party lasted until late in the night and everybody agreed: it was a blast!

Following the wishes of Sonja und Reinhard Ernst, the building received the blessing of Bishop Dr Georg Bätzing, Chairman of the German Bishops’ Conference, a week after the Gala.

And then long-awaited 23rd June finally arrived: a sunny summery morning filled with anticipation as the Museum Reinhard Ernst opened its doors to the public. The excitement to discover what had been hiding behind the white and hermetic façade was palpable as the first visitors streamed into the building at 10.15 am. While long queues formed outside, Kathrin Grün (Head of Press and Public Relations at the mre), Reinhard Ernst, Gert-Uwe Mende (Lord Mayor of Wiesbaden) and Dr Oliver Kornhoff (Director of the mre) addressed those present in the Maki Forum with a festive speech. The day was a complete success and we were able to celebrate with over 4000 art and architecture enthusiasts, big and small, from Wiesbaden and abroad. The energy and gratitude into the building, for it had become clear what a contribution the museum founder has made to the cultural scene in Wiesbaden and on an international level.
